Laser Hair Removal – Overview

Male laser hair removal is a growing trend in grooming. Many men today are seeking to improve their looks by removing or thinning out unwanted body hair. What was once the preserve of bodybuilders, cyclists, swimmers or male exotic dancers, laser hair removal treatment is now widely used  by men of all ages and occupations.

Most men are not necessarily opting to remove it all but more often want it thinned out on their backs and chests or cleaned up around the back of their necks or ears. Eyebrows are also popular spots to improve their shape and get rid of that unibrow look.

Laser hair removal for men is definitely preferable to smelly creams, painful waxing or constant shaving and it’s perfectly suited to larger areas such as the chest and back. This is definitely a great way for men to permanently remove any unwanted body hair.

Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses long pulse lasers to remove the hair from the body. The lasers are specifically calibrated to precisely match the laser light to the hair follicle size, depth and location to prevent re-growth in the treated areas. The laser works by emitting a pulse of light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The heat from the light effectively destroys the hair shaft without affecting the skin or hair follicle. Because it’s the pigment that absorbs the light, laser hair removal works best on individuals with light skin and dark hair.

Treatments for male laser hair removal are similar to those for women although may take longer depending on the area of the body. Eyebrows, necks or around the ears may take only a few minutes while chests, backs or legs may take up to an hour or longer. Most people will 6-10 treatments that are usually scheduled every 4-6 weeks. This is because the laser only works on hair in the active growth phase (anagen) and, because all hair does not grow at the same rate, any hair not in this phase during the treatment will not be affected. This is a discussion you should have with the clinic as part of your initial evaluation to understand your particular needs and situation.

The treatment is described as ‘uncomfortable’ but not overly so. The most commonly used description is that of a rubber band being snapped against your skin. The laser pulses are very quick so any discomfort is over quickly. Some people may feel more pain that others and the are topical anesthetics to deal with those who have sensitive skin. After treatment you should apply aloe vera or something similar to sooth the skin.

Two to three weeks after the laser treatment for hair removal, you should start to see hair reappear but it’s not growing back. Instead, it’s the treated hairs falling out or ‘shedding’. This is a good sign as it indicates the laser treatment was effective. At this point you should be hair free for the next 4-6 weeks until the dormant hairs in the first phase start to grow at which point your return and repeat the treatment. Each time you’ll see less and less hair grow back until eventually the laser treatment will have done its work. Even so, some finer hairs may still be present that are too small to be affected by the laser. Many people use electrolysis as a final step for complete hair removal

Laser hair removal cost is hard to estimate as everyone is different. Factors that affect the cost are:

  • Color of skin (darker skin requires more treatments)
  • Color of hair
  • Thickness of hair
  • Where the hair is on the body and how much is to be removed

With upper lips in the $100 range and backs at $300 and up (very general guidelines per treatment), it’s best to consult with your physician to understand your particular needs. Given the number of treatments required it could get pricey but remember, this is a permanent solution. You should weigh the cost of the laser hair removal against the recurring cost of waxing, shaving, etc. over several years, not to mention the effort, inconvenience and discomfort from these other methods.

Male laser hair removal is a well proven, safe and effective way to deal with unwanted body hair. The process has been perfected over several years and the lasers are constantly being improved specifically for this procedure. If growing hair were as easy as removing it, all men’s hair troubles would be gone!
